Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first appearance was in the television screen in the role of Jackie Harris, a character which was played by her mother in her role on the ABC show Roseanne. However, her parents did not allow her to act until she turned an adult, for fear of the effects stress would affect their child. Perry admitted that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school. She began doing it to connect with new people in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she got small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness led Perry home to California and theater roles were readily available. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. Perry was a regular character in the ABC political drama Scandal, starring her dad. She played the role of a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. Despite her family link to the character she got the part through an audition.
